U Street Then, and Now

U Street embodies the sentiment that the District is more than "Washington. "

Far enough from Capitol Hill to have its own identity separate from the industry of government, but centrally located and accessible for DC residents and visitors alike, UStreet is a complete neighborhood with a substantial and robust African American heritage, musical history, a variety of historical buildings and monuments, and is as home to thousands of DC residents and businesses.

What to expect: a mix of historical perspective, exploring the urban environment, listening to music from DC's past and present, and observing the many murals that populate the neighborhood walking east to west.

The walking journey will focus on how this neighborhood became known as Black Broadway, how it flourished, and how residents look to preserve that legacy in the present.

Sites on the tour, in order of exploration:

Howard Theatre, Duke Ellington Memorial, "DC to the World" Alley Mural, "Little Ethiopia (9th Street), African American Civil War Memorial, Ben's Chili Bowl, Lincoln Theatre.

Optional stops based on group interest: Malcolm X Park (also known as Meridian Hill Park), Striver's Section Historic District (including Frederick Douglass' and Langston Hughes' residences), LeDroit Park neighborhood.

Meeting Location + Tour Duration

Meeting location: I will meet you in front of Howard Theatre 620 T Street NW. The closest Metro station is Shaw-Howard Univ on the Green Line. It's about a 2 minute walk from there.

End location: 14th and U Street NW. This intersection is near several bus lines as well as the Metro/subway system.

Duration: 2 hours 30 min.

Smaller groups may finish in less time, and larger groups will likely go for the 2.5 hour time frame. We will cover as much as possible in time allotted. If the group is up for it, we can also explore nearby Malcolm X / Meridian Hill Park (moderate uphill walk).
