Discover the magnificent residence of Maximilian of Habsburg and Charlotte of Belgium
The Miramare castle is a majestic 19th-century mansion, built for Maximilian of Habsburg, brother of the emperor Francis Joseph, on the tip of a promontory overlooking the sea. It is surrounded by a huge park full of exotic and rare tree species.
Maximilian lived here with his wife Charlotte, daughter of the King of Belgium only about 4 years before setting off to Mexico to be crowned as Emperor. A visit inside gives you an idea of the opulence that European 19th-century royals enjoyed as the residence retains all its original interior furnishing. In spite of their wealth and social status, however, their life was unfortunate. The beauty of the castle and the park, together with the sad and romantic story of the young imperial couple, still fascinates tourists all over the world and has made it one of the most visited destinations in Europe.
