Gold and wine in the Thracian culture
The Thracians are known for a couple of myths: they stemmed from Thrax, the son of Ares; that they were a key ally to the Troy according to Iliad; that they were second numerous to Indians according to Herodotus.
Who were the people who settled the Balkans prior to the Thracians? Where did Thracians come from or they were indigenous Balkan population? What were their religious and cultural connections with Scythians, Greeks, Persians, and Celts? To these questions we shall search for answers in museums of Panagyuriste, Kazanlak, and Plovdiv as well as their temples close to Strelcha, Starosel, and Kazanlak. We will also have a wine tasting in Starosel winery.
We depart from the travellers' hotel at 8. 30 am and proceed in direction to Panaguyriste. There we shall visit the local museum and look at the Panagyuriste treasure. Next, we shall see the temple and burial mount of Frog mount close to Strelcha. We will have lunch and wine tasting in Starosel winery and then we shall continue with the temple and burial mount of Starosel. From there we shall travel to Hissarya and see how the Thracian population integrated into Roman society such as the city of Diocletianopolis. There we shall have dinner and spa. Next day we will continue with Kazanlak its museum and two of the burial mounts in its vicinity. From there we shall travel in direction to Old Town of Plovdiv. There we will have lunch and visit to the Archaeological Museum. In the evening we will return to Sofia.
The tour could be customized with one more day to see the Alexandrovska mount and Perperikon, or with two more days so to visit the tomb of Mezek, the Roman villa Armira and the city of Kabyle.
