Excursion to Jamdani & Khadi weaving villages & Heritage sites
Jamdani is a Persian term. Jama- means cloth & Dana- means Diapering. Jamdani mean 'Diapered Cloth'. Muslims introduced the Jamdani style of weaving in Bengal. The claim seems probable in the sense that the Muslims held the monopoly of Jamdani in Bengal for centuries both in its weaving & marketing. But Jamdani as a fabric is considered to be much older than Muslim rule in Bengal. The Arthasastra (about 300 AD) mentions Vanga to be the home of a very delicate textile staff. Visit Panam City the ruins of building & Folk Art Museum at Sonargaon the old capital of Bengal
Khadi, also known as "khaddar" has a long history at Comilla district 100 km from Dhaka. In the 6th century a local variation of Khadi cloth was described by Huen Tsang of China & Marco Polo in 12th century AD describes a fabrics, most probably khadi Muslin in the Bengal region to be as fine as the spider's web. Romans were great aficionados of Bengal khadi Muslin and imported vast amounts of fabrics. Visit Mainamati Buddhist sites & Museum.
