Away from hustle and bustle of a big city and discover a different side of Tokyo
Spend a half day at the most climbed mountain in Japan, Mt. Takao. It takes only 60 min by train from Shinjuku station and it's suitable for everyone from small children to senior citizens.
You can get to the half-top of the mountain by cable car/chair lift and enjoy a spectacular view of the city. From the cable car/chairlift stations to the historical Yakuo-in Temple takes 20min on foot.
The Yakuo-in Temple is guarded by Tengu, demon-like creatures with a long, pointy nose or a crow's beak. You will enjoy seeing many Tengu related items and taking pictures of them.
It's about 10min walk from the Yakuo-in Temple to the summit.
At the half-top and the top of the mountain, there are restaurants and shops providing nice "Soba", local buckwheat noddles, various snacks, and drinks.
When you are back to Takaosanguchi station, you can soak in the natural hot springs at "Gokurakuyu" to complete your day in Takao at your leisure.
Here is a sample itinerary.
