Dracula, Harry Potter, Brideshead and Heartbeat

a tour from York taking in Castle Howard estate (Brideshead revisited) Helmsley Castle and Rievaulx Abbey, the North York Moors including the village of Goathland (Aidensfield in Heartbeat) and the north york moors railway (also used in Harry Potter) to the coastal town Whitby (Dracula and Captain Cook). This tour is priced for a group of 4-7. If you are a couple it can be done at a somewhat lower cost in a smaller vehicle.

Itinerary

Start York,
- Castle Howard (25 minutes drive from york) drive through or visit (allow 2 hours minimum for visit)
-Helmsley (castle and Rievaulx Abbey)
- Pickering (20 minutes) short walk to see "period" station and castle.
- across the moors (40 minutes)
-Goathland, Heartbeat TV series "Aidensfield" a walk from the Mallyan spout Inn to see the waterfall (500m each way on a sometimes muddy path, downhill on the way but uphill back!)
Goathland station, used in many TV and films inc Harry Potter
30 mins to whitby, view the abbey and walk down the 199 steps into the town. Pickup by quayside.
-25 minutes to (time permitting) Robin Hoods Bay, another very scenic fishing village, a walk down to the seafront is recommended, but with the warning that you have to walk back up this hill!
90 minutes drive, return to York

Transportation

Transport is provided between the locations of the tour at no cost. The vehicles I generally use are a Nissan Qashqai, for 2 adults and 1 or 2 children, or a Volkswagen Transporter, for up to 7 Adults. The VW gives a higher ride and better view, so if you prefer this please ask.

Other: Transport and guiding throughout, parking charges where required.
I will not be with you every step as in some locations e.g. Whitby, I will drop you off at the top of the hill and meet you again with the car at the bottom, so the tour can be (almost) downhill only.

What’s Extra

  • Personal Expenses
  • Souvenirs

A Recent Review of this tour

Just a great tour. I have used Toursbylocals maybe 20 times and never had a bad experience but Keith's tour was certainly the best. He's down to earth. Right away I felt like I was going around with a friend. A friend with an encyclopedic knowledge of his subject. Which can be the entirety of England and Wales and I know he guides at least as far as Edinburgh. Amazing.
