The King's vow and the Queen's dowry (by minivan)
Your unforgettable day will start just half and hour away from Lisbon. Mafra offers a rural location where you can discover a unique place that will take you back to the 1700's in Portugal. . . More than 1200 rooms, more than 4700 doors and windows. . . it covers an area of more than 4ha. This outstanding ensemble is the result of the fulfilment of a vow made by King John V: a Royal Palace, a Convent and a library with a precious collection of 36000 volumes.
Then, we'll go towards Óbidos, located on a hilltop and encircled by a fortified wall, it's considered a dowry for several Portuguese Queens and one of the most picturesque and well preserved medieval towns in Portugal.
All year round there are several events going on such as the Chocolate Festival, the Medieval Fair, the Christmas Town. . .
A charming day trip only a few minutes away from Lisbon is waiting for you!
Note: On Tuesdays, since it's the closing day for Mafra's Convent/Palace, the alternative will be the XVIII century Queluz Royal Palace.

Marta guided us (two well traveled couples from the US) for fours days in and around Lisbon with ease, warmth and a deep understanding of the history, language and culture of her Portugal. She efficiently structured days around our interests, leaving us wishing for more days together. A big bonus was her driving and navigation skills and her recommendations for interesting sites, neighborhoods and restaurants. Most of all, she was fun to be with and we truly hope our paths will cross again.
