On the trail of royalty
A one day tour from Tours, visiting the medieval town of Loches and the renowned renaissance château of Chenonceau.
Loches still has its medieval city gates, a very early medieval château and is one of the places Joan of Arc came to plead with the Dauphin (Crown Prince) in her quest to save France from the English.
Chenonceau is the iconic Loire Valley destination, spanning the river Cher, and home to a host of characters over the years.
Along the way we will find time to visit some of the almost unknown sites, as well as a winery.
The tour may also be available for groups of up to 7 people using two classic 1950s Citroën Traction Avant cars - please contact us for details.
We meet you at 9:00am.
Our first stop is the medieval town of Loches, where we visit the late medieval royal residence and the early medieval castle keep before strolling through the picturesque town to our restaurant for lunch. You have the chance to 'meet' the beautiful Agnès Sorel, and stand in the room that Joan of Arc came to all those years ago. If you visit on Wednesday or Saturday we will also take in the local market, one of the best in the region.
Lunch is followed by a drive through rolling countryside to the château of Chenonceau. Once home to Catherine de Medici and Diane de Poitiers, we can admire the stunning architecture and setting. The characters will come alive when we show you contemporary portraits and recount the gossip, romance, tragedy and political manouvering of their times. On our way out we take a turn through the lovely gardens.
Our return is along winding roads through vineyards, stopping at a cave to sample some local wines.

This was a wonderful day in the country. My husband loved being in the antique car. Susan was an excellent guide with a wealth of knowledge. We learned a great deal about living in a small town in France today in addition to the information on the historical sights. Nice relaxed lunch. Susan provided insight into Joan of Arc sites which we appreciated. It was a stretch for our budget but we really did think it was worth it.
