A gentle walk through the old part of the city.
Say you spare a few hours and you don't really know what to do or where to go. And say you happen to find yourself in Madrid. Then I recommend you let me take on a short tour around the historical centre of the city. A walk from Plaza Mayor and all the way down to the renovated Manzanares riverside will help you understand how a small medieval town could eventually become the headquarters of the Spanish Empire.
It is easy to get lost in cities you don't know, but it can be equally delightful sometimes. I believe this to be the case of Madrid. To start with, we'll try to keep within the boundaries of the old medieval walls: they will be our geographical guideline. Remains of the walls tend to appear unexpectedly, here and there, as if by chance. It'll be fun to trace them below the modern surface of later urban addittions. It is a bit an up-and-down, Toledo-style kind of neighbourhood, and monuments suddenly pop up before the eyes, as if they had been waiting a long time for us to discover them. Churches, palaces, alleyways, cobbled little streets, hidden orchards; they all keep the secrets of the Golden Age, and the air here is filled with the echoes and scents of a distant past.
In addition to this I will try my best to take you off the beaten track and to show you what's interesting about living downtown Madrid. Traditional (and not so) shopping, interesting public interiors and great tips about food and drink.

Sean is a brilliant guide. He is a native and deeply versed in the history, the culture and the language. And by the way also speaks excellent English. Because of his breadth of knowledge, he is able to customize the tour and improvise as needed. Along the way, you get excellent referrals for everything from shopping for gifts or food, to restaurants and sights to see. And quite frankly he is just a joy to be with. Thank you Sean you made my trip to Madrid memorable.
