Spectacular walking tour in the world's best preserved archaeological site - Skip-the-line included
Herculaneum is a beautiful, small Roman city to explore!
The city provides a glimpse into the private lives of the Romans.
It is an italic town with an orthogonal grid pattern of streets. Located on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius, just 4 miles South from Naples and 7 miles North from Pompeii, the town was quite small, as the total area was of 20 hectares, with a population of about 3000 inhabitants.
During the famous, unfortunate Vesuvius' eruption, a 20-meter-thick avalanche of muds had buried Herculaneum in 79 AD; this made possible that its two-storey houses, carbonized wooden objects, intact paintings and mosaics came incredibly well preserved to us!
