"Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it." (George Santayana)
Discover the vast Jewish heritage of Budapest from magnificent synagogues through moving holocaust memorials to the city's vibrant contemporary Jewish life during a half-day walking tour!
Start the tour at the crown jewels of the city: the huge Grand Synagogue, the impressive Orthodox Synagogue and the modest Conservative Synagogue of Budapest. Understand the historical roots of Judaism in Central Europe and admire the (not only golden and silver) treasures of the community in the Jewish Museum.
Remember the holocaust events in the the Glass House (where thousands of Hungarian Jews were saved during the war). See the Jewish mass graves from WWII, stop at the victims' Weeping Willow Tree, and think of the message of the moving Shoe Memorial and other monuments in memory of the lives lost during the deportations between 1941 and 1945.
Have a look inside the historical apartments of the Budapest Jews in an old 19th century house.
Enjoy the atmospheric passages, courtyards, contemporary street art and recall the memory of famous Hungarian Jews.
To freshen up in the end, sit down in one of the local bars for a coffee/tea and try "flódni" (a delicious Eastern European Jewish dessert) with me!
