Day Tour from Akaroa with Private Guide.... a quiet day of scenic rambling through this delightful area....up to 10 pax !
Akaroa means "Long Harbour" in Maori and it is situated in the harbour of an inactive volcano, part of Banks Peninsula on the east coast of the South Island. . . . . not far away we explore some of the scenic Eastern bays of Banks Peninsula that take us back in time, finding out about the Maori, French and European history of this unique area. The ancient volcano here has created smaller bays indenting the eastern coast creating an area of great natural beauty and a timelessness that take us back to the colonial times and before. Our route follows part of the Mail Run plus other bays of interest. Visit the last cheese factory on Banks Peninsula (sample some cheese) and have the option of tasting some local wine. . . . . . and find out about the people and animals that live here.
The eastern bays include Okains Bay and Little Akaloa Bay (lovely small church) . . . the best of the local Mail Run. . . . . plus many smaller bays which have been farmed for many years since the colonial days with many of the original buildings surviving still. . . . . there are calm, sheltered beaches and you will have the opportunity to go for a stroll. Along the crater rim runs the Summit Road at 500m. or 1500 ft providing spectacular views to the north and south and providing access to the bays. See the oldest general store in New Zealand still operating, hear about the colonists, Maori history, sheep, cattle and possums.
Sample cheese at Barry's Bay Cheese Factory (the last on Bank's Peninsula). We suggest lunch at Little River Cafe where you can browse in the adjacent Art Gallery and Crafts Shop. Birdling's Flat is an ocean beach of multi-coloured gemstones. You have the option of wine-tasting at the end of the day (with Alan, the owner of Akaroa Winery or Renan at French Peaks Winery).

Dermot was an absolutely fantastic guide! His knowledge about Akaroa and the surrounding area was a terrific enhancement to what is already a beautiful area and he was incredibly flexible in accommodating what can be a quite unwieldy group of 8. It is obvious that Dermot is passionate about his hometown area and it shone through in a way that made our time with him one of the most memorable of our trip. He was also great with the camera, helping us to preserve those cherished memories. Thank you again!
