Once called the Gibraltar of the north
Suomenlinna sea fortress is located upon granite islands outside Helsinki. It takes about 15 - 20 minutes to reach the fortress by ferry from the Market Square. The islands have bastions, canons, museums but also nice cafes and a small beach. Suomenlinna sea fortress has over 900, 000 visitors per year. It became a UNESCO World Heritage sight in 1991.
You will see a little bit of the Helsinki archipelago during the ferry ride. The next hours will be spent walking around Suomenlinna sea fortress. I recommend a visit to the Toy museum if you are interested in old toy. Please notice that the museum is operated by a private person and therefore open only during the summer.
You will have time to do some shopping as well as having refreshments.
