This tour catalogues, from the Highlanders' perspective, the efforts of the Stuart dynasty to regain the British throne
This 8 -hour tour will provide unique perspectives by revealing the Gaelic aspects of these military campaigns and principally that of 1745/46, simply known as 'The '45'.
If you would prefer to use your own transportation, I will accompany you, The fee would be quoted and I'll create a custom tour for you.
Your journey will take you by ferry boat over the sea from Skye to Mallaig, through Morar and Glenfinnan to the point where Charles Edward Stuart, or 'Bonnie Prince Charlie', raised his father's standard in 1746.
Following the route his small army took, we reach Fort William which was heavily bombarded by the Prince's forces. Here we will have time for a comfort stop and refreshments. After lunch, you will visit the imposing remains of the 12th-century fortress that once commanded this vital strategic position. Returning northward, you will reach the lonely fastnesses of Glenelg where an earlier Jacobite effort of 1719 ended in defeat. And then journeying pass the spectacular island stronghold of Eilean Donan Castle you will learn of the consequences for its defenders during 1719 Rising. Returning by bridge over the sea to Skye at Kyleakin you will see the gaunt remains of 15th-century Moil Castle that once controlled this narrow sea passage. From the bridge you will return to your accommodation.
