Freixenet was started after the union of two Spanish families with a lengthy history in winemaking: the Ferrers and the Salas.

Montserrat, the Natural Park is a multi-peaked mountain shaped by the wind and rain and that is where it's name comes from, as it looks like a saw, the serrated mountain.

Almost to the top we find Santa Maria de Montserrat, the monastery, Catalonia's most important religious retreat. Inside the Basilica we can visit the Virgin of Montserrat (the black virgin), is Catalonia's Virgin.

Montserrat is an inspiration for Gaudí that he adapts in Casa Batlló and La Sagrada Familia.

Itinerary

The tour starts at your hotel or apartment from there we will take the car to go to Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, known as the city of Cava (sparkling wine). 80% of the production in Spain is done here, where will visit Freixenet cellar, specialized in Cava, includes audiovisual history of the cellar, the cava making, we will be visiting the different cellars by walk and train and cava tasting (two glasses).

On the way to Montserrat, we will have a stop for lunch at a restaurant farm to table on the lower part of the mountain with a great scenery that depicts its name. Finished lunch we will have an outstanding drive through the mountain seeing in a clear day the outline of the Pirineus and the spectacular Montserrat's mountain walls. Once we reach the religious retreat we will walk to visit the Monastery of Montserrat, Basílica and la Moreneta (the black virgin). On the way we will also pass by a flea market with local cheese, honey, fig cake, etc.

Back to Barcelona.

A Recent Review of this tour

Francisco was a wonderful guide for a great tour! We spend a long, leisurely day learning about Cava and then touring Monserrat and seeing the Black Madonna. Francisco was very patient with us, as we tended to get stuck in the gift shops and also stopped at the (delicious) cheese vendors. Our local lunch was fabulous. He was full of interesting information, and was very organized. The car was roomy and comfortable for four. Highly recommend both Francisco as a guide and the Cava/Monserrat tour!
