Walking tour of the village, visit of a Medieval Castle and a Roman Villa
Lake Garda is Italy's biggest lake. Each town, village and lake shore has its own character and uniqueness. Thus it is so fascinating and charming to discover the entire lake in company of a knowledgable guide by car or boat (private or public transportation). It is possible to choose among the most striking sites of the lake, taking advantage of a visit to admire the beauty of architecture and landscape and tasting the delicious typical products for which this area is famous all over the world. Sirmione is rightly considered the true pearl of Lake Garda and I suggest that you discover this place dominated by the medieval Scaliger Fortress with its dock, the parish church of Santa Maria Maggiore, the baths which profit of the Boiola sulfur source, the Villa of the great American soprano Maria Callas and above all the most important archeological area in Northen Italy, the roman Villa called Grottoes of Catullus.
SIRMIONE is the Pearl of Lake Garda, "the gem of all the peninsulas", as the poet Catullus wrote. The visit of the village commences with the suggestive Scala Castle of medieval times, built at the end of the 13th century by the Lords of Verona. It is the impressive gateway to the medieval town of Sirmione which one enters by passing a little stone bridge in order to go inside. Along narrow and close medieval streets one reaches the Parish Church of S. Maria which contains many images and paintings to be admired together with different altars and precious 18th century works of marble. Slightly uphill, one reaches the S. Salvatore Church, which dates to the 8th century. At last, after admiring the park of the prestigious and luxurious 5 star Hotel Villa Cortine and the nearby Villa of Maria Callas, the entrance to the Grotte di Catullo has been reached. It is the most important archeological area of the entire Lombardy region with imposing remains of what has once been a luxurious Roman Villa on Lake Garda.
