UNESCO wolrd heritage site Shirakawago and old merchant-house Takayama tour
Shirakawago village was designated as a UNESCO world heritage site in 1995. There are 59 Gassho farmhouses there. The A-framed shape of big thatched roofs brings to mind the gesture people make when bringing their hands together in prayer. This Buddhist gesture is known as Gassho.
City Takayama developed as a merchant town during the Edo period, about 300 years ago. The town has been working as a distribution center for the surroundings in the HIda region. Old merchant houses have been preserved as the preservation districts for groups of traditional buildings.
