starts from SELINUNTE area with Local Guide Mimmo

Segesta, according to the traditional legend, had a Trojan origin. It is located on the isolated hill called Barbaro, which offers a great panorama. The well preserved temple and the greek theater were built in the late 5th century BC. The high-stepped, semi-circular theatre opens onto a breathtaking panorama over the surrounding countryside with the sea in the distance.

Selinunte is one of the most evocative places in Sicily, also one of the most impressive of all Greek sites, never having been built over in modern times. In the 5th Century BC it was second only to Syracuse. The archeological site includes several temples, part of the excavated ancient city, amazing ruins more than 2500 years old and a beautiful landscape.

At the ancient quarries Cave di Cusa (Optional Experience) the old quarries of Selinunte, we find huge columns drums in various states of construction one leaves wondering at the effort of transporting such enormously heavy bits of masonry. Surely only the Titans!

Itinerary

SELINUNTE: guided tour at the Eastern Hill with three temples, then the Acropolis with the ancient city, more temples and many other interesting excavations dating back to the 7th century B. C. - It is the only classical Greek city where the entire metropolis is still preserved, mainly buried under sand and earth.

Next follow your guide on a guided tour in SEGESTA: visit the well-preserved Greek Temple and Theater built in the late 5th century BC. Also see a few remains of an Arabic mosque, a Norman church and the Forum Romanum at this fascinating archaeological site.

In CAVE di CUSA, the old quarries of Selinunte, we find huge columns drums in various states of construction, some completed, some half-hewn from the rock, some romantically overgrown.

A Recent Review of this tour

Mimmo is an excellent guide and gave us a very good and concise history of Selinunte. This helped put everything into context far better than reading it in a guide book. We had a very enjoyable tour of the temples both of Selinunte and Segestra the following day. Having the same guide for both meant we did not cover the same ground twice but looked at different aspects or similarities between the two sites. Mimmo also made some excellent recommendations for restaurants.
