Before settling into a tour guide job (I was using my employment career!), as former Senior Immigration Officer and Senior Foreign Service Officer with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Papua New Guinea, I was mostly involved in attending International Meetings and exchanging views and ideas on important agendas discussed at those meetings. I met participants from different countries through International Meetings, Conferences, Seminars, Workshops, Trainings etc. Through exchanges with participants at those meetings, I build that interest to join tourism industry in terms of working as a tour guide, meeting different people with different background and nationality. It was my career that made me want to shift from full time employment to a Tour Guide Operator Business.
As former Senior Immigration Officer, and Senior Foreign Service Officer to a Tour Guide Director position is amazing and challenging as (I was actually using my employment career in shifting roles!). I spent some time as an international tour director at management level, learning firsthand what goes into leading groups of people through some of the tourism destinations and famous sites as well as selling tourism products and understanding the role of a Tour Guide.
I believe that Tour Guide job is a dream job if you know what you're getting into and I believe in hard work. I felt like I earned my degree in learning about tourism and what Tour Director or Guide needs to be acquainted with in terms of knowledge, capacity building and what products they sell for their clients.
The truth is there's no one way to go about landing your dream job. But it does help to pick as many brains as possible and start one yourself in the industry you believe in.
