Visit Akrotiri with an archaeologist
1613 B. C.
One the most violent volcanic eruptions that humanity has ever seen bursts and the prosperous, cosmopolitan town of Akrotiri get buried under a thick layer of ash forever. Wall paintings, paved streets, multi-storied buildings, water supply and sewage system are just some of the finds which surprise hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.
Akrotiri surprises even the most dubious. Let me, as an archaeologist, introduce you the Pompeii of the Aegean. The frescoes found in Akrotiri are now in museums and laboratories. I am going to show you some of the most exciting frescoes on my iPad.
The Red Beach comes second. Are you curious about the nearby famous beach? Let's take some pictures that will make you remember it for life.
- After we meet each other, we reach the Archaeological Site where we explore the prehistoric town with me giving you all the interesting details. The site is under a rooftop which protects us from the sun and the heat.
- We drive to the parking of the Red Beach and walk for about 5 minutes the rocky terrain. Standing on a natural balcony, we watch the Red Beach from above.
- On the way back we may have a short stop to take some great pictures of the caldera view.

Panos brought the Akrotiri ruins to life and helped us appreciate this ancient site and its significance. He took his time to explain its history; had all pictures of the frescoes in his tablet which helped us relate well and enhanced our experience. Also took us to the red beach and Pyrgos; the whole tour was a fantastic experience. He shared a wealth of knowledge about the island and Greek History. Very kind, patient, and extremely knowledgeable; quite engaging with children; Highly recommended!
