Discover the Sanctuary of Lourdes During a Full Day's Guided Tour
For over 159 years, millions of the faithful have flocked to the small French village of Lourdes nestled at the foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains in Southwestern France. where it is said the sick can be healed miraculously. In 1858, the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared eighteen times to a local girl, Bernadette. We will visit the famous Grotto of Massabielle where Bernadette experienced her visions and where the healing spring flows. We will visit the Rosary, St. Pius X and Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Basilicas, as well as the healing baths and the candle trolleys. After lunch in a local restaurant we can visit the Chateau Fort of Lourdes perched on a hill overlooking the village or ride the Funicular of the Pic du Jer for a spectacular view of the surrounding valley or return to the Sanctuary. Whether you're a believer or a skeptic you won't leave Lourdes without feeling affected.
Morning - Welcome meet & greet.
Enter Sanctuary at the Gates of Mercy.
Follow the pilgrim's path along the esplanade to the Rosary Basilica.
Vist the Crypt.
Visit the Grotto of Massabielle where Bernadette saw the apparitions of the Virgin Mary.
Rest for a mass or blessing.
Visit Candle Trolley's, Baths, Pools and Fountains.
Cross the bridge to the Church of St. Bernadette.
Break for lunch in Lourdes outside the Sanctuary.
After lunch there are many options to choose from-shopping at one of the souvenir stores, a visit to the House of Bernadette and the Museum. Re-enter the Sanctuary to visit the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception or the underground Basilica of Pius X.
Have a guided your of the Pyrenean Museum or drive to the Pic du Jer Funicular.
Our tour ends at 4:30, but you may wish to stay for the 9 p. m. Torchlight Procession.
Meeting Location + Tour Duration
Meeting location: I will meet you at a location within a 15 km radius or 1/2 hour drive - this includes the Lourdes-Tarbes airport. If you arrive outside of the meeting location radius, such as Pau Pyrenees airport, there will be an additional charge for pick up and return.
End location: I will return you to the same location I have picked you up unless otherwise arranged, so it is very important you for to communicate your preference. If I return you to another location I would be happy to suggest after-tour activities and restaurants as well as other places for departure home.
Duration: 7 hours
Weather, traffic and time of year may effect the duration time of the tour. The best time to visit the Sanctuary of Lourdes is April - October, however this is the height of the tourist season. An estimated 4-6 million people visit Lourdes every year.
A welcome package of information and special souvenir. Myself as a driver-guide plus a regular Lourdes guide when necessary, and on Monday and Wednesdays a special private guide who is fluent in both French and English and lives just outside the Sanctuary will join us. Vehicle with AC vehicle and fuel charges. All tolls and parking fees, water and coffee-tea breaks.
Estimated Local Cash Needed
40 Euros - This is an estimate based upon lunch at a local restaurant @ 20 euros/person, entrance fee to the Pyrenees Museum at the Château Fort of Lourdes at 7 euros per person and return ticket price for the Pic du Jer Funicular of 11 euros.
You will need to carry your own travel and health insurance. You will need euros for lunch in a nice restaurant and entrance fees to the Pyrenean Museum and Funicular du Jer. If you would like to go over the 7 hour limit my price is 60€/hour and this must be arranged in advance.
I am not a licensed guide inside museums due to local regulations. We will use a licensed Department of Tourism guide when necessary.
