Sabbioneta: An ideal Renaissance city - Unesco World Heritage Centre
Mantua was not alone in experiencing the splendours and the learned sensibility of the Gonzaga family. In their feuds the cadet lines of the Gonzaga family gave birth to courts rich in works of art. Among all these feuds Sabbioneta reached the prestigious rank of Ducky in 1577 and became the Little Athens of the Renaissance thanks to a Gonzaga grown-up among the great of Europe. In the 16th century a village in the Po Valley was turned into a capital town according to the models of old Roman towns, thanks to its Prince: Vespasiano Gonzaga Colonna. Sabbioneta boasts an almost intact Renaissance street-network, a city wall a two city gates, urbanistic structures and buildings like the theatre, the Ducal Palace, the Garden Palace, the long gallery, the Incoronata church, where Vespasiano was buried, and the synagogue. The theatre represented a real revolutionary work, being the first example of permanent theatre in an age of strolling players. Sabbioneta is located 30 km west from Mantua

We were a group of four experienced travelers. Manuela was an excellent guide. Her knowledge of the history., culture, cuisine and art of the northern Italian cities was thorough. We took two tours in one day which lasted nine hours in Mantua and Sabioneta with a lunch break which considering we all are inn our seventies was quite.an undertaking but we had a great tour which we will all remember. Highly recommended
