Discover the underground of the city with an archaeologist - Private transportation included
This tour is designed to discover Rome's underground treasures. We will visit Cripta dei Cappuccini, Basilica of St. Clement and Catacombs of St. Callixtus.
We will meet at the entrance of Catacombs of St. Callixtus and we will start the tour exploring the Catacombs themselves in which were buried tens of martyrs, 16 popes and very many Christians. Afterwards, we will visit the three different chronological and structural layers of the Basilica of St. Clement. Using a stairway we will reach the lower basilica, which is dated back to 4th century AD and preserves wonderful medieval frescoes. Running down through another stairway we will arrive in a third underground level, whose structures are dated back to first century AD where we will find a complex of ancient Roman houses. Finally, we will visit the Cripta dei Cappuccini located just under the Church Santa Maria della Concezione.
** This tour is not available on Wednesday as the Catacombs of St. Callixtus are closed.

Dimo and his driver were great! Dimo's knowledge & study of the after-life in Rome were incredible, & his ability to draw us in was superb. Dimo remains an active archaeologist & is truly fascinated by why lies under the feet of Rome, while most people assume it's just the immediate "dirt". He pointed out nuances to historical frescoes, & we witnessed a literal beheading of Jesus by our ancestors who insisted that was the perfect placement of the next level of their church. Great tour to escape the heat!
