Ferrara and Ravenna day tour
This tour is especially recommended for people who spend in Bologna or Venice a short-term stay and wish to visit both cities on the same day. Ravenna may not be as great as Rome or exotic as Constantinople, yet it was where imperial Rome had its last gasp when it became the capital of the Western Roman Empire and the centre of late Roman mosaic art. After the Western Roman Empire it became the capital of the Ostrogothic Kingdom and the residence of the governors of the Byzantine Empire in Italy that explains the fact that despite its small size, Ravenna boasts UNESCO World Heritage sites containing the richest heritage of mosaics in the world and they are among the most treasured examples of early Christian and Byzantine art in Western Europe. Ferrara became an intellectual and artistic centre that attracted the greatest minds of the Italian Renaissance. It is an outstanding planned Renaissance city which has retained its urban fabric virtually intact.
The tour includes the following visits:
• Church of S. Vitale
• Mausoleum of Galla Placidia: breathtaking interior of the 5th century
• Baptistry of Neon
• Dante's tomb
• Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo: old private chapel of King Theoderic the Great.
• A walk in the city centre thro Piazza del popolo
