Canal and shopping street in Otaru and NIKKA Whisky in Yoichi
Otaru City has good natural harbor so the city has been developed centered around the port. On the heyday, Otaru was gateway of Hokkaido prefecture. To cope with increasing load for ship trade, stone warehouses were built and canal was reclaimed from the sea. Today warehouses were renovated to become shops and restaurants in Sakaimachi shopping street, which stretches 900m with 120 shops. Among them are popular KItaichi Tableware Glass Shop, music box shop that has a wide assortment of music box, sushi bars, popular sweets shops and so on.
In Yoichi Town, about 30 minute away from Otaru, NIKKA Whisky Distillery became a spot to attract many eyes, because its quality of whisky and love story between the distillery founder Masataka and his Scottish wife Rita, whose drama was broadcasted on TV. You can learn the history of whisky making in Japan and enjoy quality of whisky.
