Fishing Market, Otaru Canal, and Shopping Street
Otaru City has good natural harbour so the city has been developed centred around on the port. In its heyday Otaru was gateway of Hokkaido. To cope with increasing load for ships, stone warehouses were built and Otaru canal was reclaimed from the sea. Now some warehouses were renovated to become shops in Sakaimachi Shopping Street which stretches 900m with 120 shops. Among them are popular Kitaici Tableware Glass Shop, music Box shop that has a wide assortment of music box, sushi bar among about 100 in Otaru, representative Hokkaido sweets shops and so on.
Otaru is still a city of sea. Next to railway station is fishing market called Sankaku market literally translated into triangle market named after its shape of premise. Fresh marine products caught at off the coast near the Otaru are sold at 15 shops including 6 restaurants, which are lined up on the either side of alley.
