Voted one of Lonely Planet's top ten places to visit in 2017.
The classic 'Ring of Kerry Tour' is well known to most tourists to Kerry.
However there is a lesser known Wild Atlantic Way off-the-beaten track tour that will take you to hidden gems that the bigger tour buses cannot visit, like 'The Skellig Ring' which was voted one of Lonely Planet's top ten places to visit in 2017.
Highlights of the Tour are:
The picturesque fishing village of Portmagee well known for its fresh seafood, lively music and dance traditions. The peaceful Valentia Island, whose many attractions include the site of the first commercially viable transatlantic telegraph cable; an option to visit the excellent Skellig Experience Visitor Centre; the tetrapod trackways which are among the oldest signs of vertebrate life on land; Geokaun mountain and Fogher Cliffs; Valentia slate quarry that provided the slate for the British Houses of Parliament; a chocolate factory (what's not to love!); views of the majestic Skellig Islands and much more. All followed by a heady mountain pass back to Killarney.
Leaving Killarney we head to Killorglin, home to one of Ireland's oldest street festivals, Puck Fair.
Having followed the Wild Atlantic Way route towards Portmagee and Valentia Island, the tour continues over a mountain pass onto Saint Finian's Bay, where you will have perfect views of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Skellig Michael, once a 6th century home to Christian monks, and now famous as a location for the latest Star Wars movies.
St Finian's Bay is also the location for Irelands only fully open plan chocolate factory where you can sample the goods.
On to Ballinskelligs, with a beautiful Blue Flag Beach nestled at the western edge of a gorgeous sheltered bay, right at the centre of the Kerry Dark-Sky Reserve. Here you will also see the famous 'castle on the beach' and the 12th century Abbey.
Back to Killarney through the isolated and breath-taking wild mountain landscape of Ballaghbeama Pass.
There will be plenty of breaks for food, coffee and of course chocolate! Don't forget your camera.
