Explore London's 2000 year old history from the Romans to the modern day
London is really a tale of two cities. The City of London, or Square Mile as it is known, is where the money has always been made and the City of Westminster, the seat of Royal, and then political power is where they manage to spend it. We could see Royal Palaces, the Houses of Parliament, the Changing of the Guard, Trafalgar Square, ancient parks and Westminster Abbey, the site of Coronations for nearly 1000 years. Afterwards we will transfer by public transport to the City which is much older. Here we can see Roman remains, fantastic modern architecture, hidden parks, St Paul's Cathedral and, of course, the Tower of London where Queens lost their heads, Kings ruled and where the Crown Jewels are kept.
This itinerary is very flexible. I will meet you at St James underground station which is well positioned to see the main sites in Westminster, the changing of the Guard, Buckingham Palace, the Royal Parks, Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament.
In the afternoon, perhaps after a pub lunch, we will transfer over to the City, starting at the Tower of London and then work our way back to finish up at St Paul's Cathedral where the tour will end. I will direct you to the most convenient underground station and offer suggestions as to your continued sightseeing.
If you are short on time and can only manage half a day you tell me what you want to see most and I will create a tour for you within your time constraints.
Meeting Location + Tour Duration
Meeting location: St James Underground Station or elsewhere by prior agreement.
End location: St Paul's Cathedral or elsewhere by prior agreement.
Duration: 8 hours
As with any big city, crowds and traffic, especially in the summer, might slow us up a bit. London's public transport system is very good and should whisk us from the Westminster to the City quickly.
This is a walking tour and utilising public transport where appropriate. It can be converted to a private car tour as a customized tour. I drive a PCO licenced modern, air-conditioned Mercedes E350 station wagon.
My services as a Blue Badge London guide all day. The Blue Badge guiding qualification is the highest level in the UK.
Estimated Local Cash Needed
20 GBP - Your own food and refreshments, any entry fees if we decide to go in to any location and fares on public transport (you should be in possession of a Zone 1 Oyster (travel) Card which is valid on the underground and buses.
Fares, entry fees if we decide to go into any of the sites, refreshments and any other miscellaneous expenditure you might decide to make.
You could, if you like, do the tour by private car. I am also a licenced driver-guide and have a modern, comfortable air-conditioned Mercedes E350 station wagon which is also PCO licenced (meaning it undergoes rigorous checks for the safety and comfort of the passengers). It is a legal requirement for paying customers to be transported in such a vehicle. If you choose this option we could cover much more ground and it is an excellent choice for those who perhaps are not so mobile but still want to see London. Please ask me for a bespoke tour quote. A maximum of four passengers (although you may find three more comfortable)!
I guide in English only
