Experience two UNESCO World Heritage sites without the rush!
This is a perfect day trip for people who have limited time but really want to experience the two of the most intriguing UNESCO World Heritage sites on the planet. Diocletian's Palace in Split, which still has more than 3, 000 people living inside its massive walls, is unique because unlike so many 1, 700 year old Roman antiquities that have become museum pieces, it's still alive. What an amazing story, how the summer home of an Emperor became the city of Split! Trogir, just 45 minutes up the coast is a remarkably preserved ensemble of astonishing 13th-18thC architecture, crowned by such a stupendous Cathedral (13thC) that like Chartres in France, you could spend days and still want more. With a terrific peka lunch with wine at one of Split's most authentic konobas, you will come back to your cruise ship or hotel filled with memories that other travelers here for a day will simply never experience.
After meeting you at the pier or in front of the Split City Tourist Office we will go to the water taxi or private car/van to drive along the coast to Trogir, about 45 minutes. Trogir itself is on its own tiny island. The Old Town is very small, so walking here is easy and efficient. We will spend about an hour and 30 minutes here, with lots of time in the amazing Cathedral because it a story as well as an extraordinary architectural monument. Then it's off to Konoba Idro for our peka lunch with wine! Walk back to our transportation to Split. The walking tour in Split is about the same length, shorter or longer depending on your need to shop! We will have you back on the pier for your tender at the appropriate time. . . usually 3:30-5PM depending on the cruise line.
Meeting Location + Tour Duration
Meeting location: We meet you on the pier if you are coming by cruise ship. If you are staying at an apartment or hotel, we meet at the Split Tourist Office, on the waterfront Riva. Look for the large white letter i on the window.
End location: We will bring you back to the pier or to the Split Tourist Office on the waterfront Riva.
Duration: 6 hours
This program takes 6 to 8 hours depending on how long your ship is in port. It's especially designed for people coming to Split on a cruise ship. To ensure you will make your departure without worry we immediately go to Trogir. After lunch we come back to Split. So if there is any "time" issue, you will always be no more than 10 minutes from the pier or your tender! If your ship docks after 12PM, we have "dinner" in Trogir around 4-4:30. But we can be as flexible as needed!
In season, June-September we may use the water taxi, or the guide's car or van depending on the size of the group and the time you have. If there are more than 6 guests, we can create a special custom program!
For guests arriving by cruise ship, we will meet you on the dock to introduce you to our professional guide, and with his private car or van return you to the dock in time for your departure. For others, we meet and greet you at the agreed location, transfer to Trogir, professionally guided walking tour in Trogir, admission to the Cathedral, peka lunch with one glass of wine, salad, peka bread; transfer back to Split, professionally guided walking tour of Diocletian's Palace, admission to the Cathedral and Jupiter's Temple. Drive back to your ship if you need this. Otherwise the tour ends on Split's waterfront Riva. More than 4 passengers we will need a van. The extra cost for this is $200 for up to 7. This is paid directly to the driver. For 4 or less, transportation by car is included.
Estimated Local Cash Needed
100 kuna, about 6 to the $1 - Check the exchange rate before you come. Now it's around 6 kuna to the $1. Great wine is around $15 a bottle, same for high quality olive oil. So excellent "souvenirs", all made here, are reasonable!
If you would like to bring back some authentic food/wine/jewelry, etc. bring your debit card. Lots of ATMs to get local currency, the kuna, since ONLY kuna is accepted, not Euros or dollars! The current rate is around 7 kuna to the $1, but check for most recent rate.
All programs to historic sites are conducted by a licensed, professional, local Croatian guide. I will meet you and act as an escort to share my experiences. For programs not requiring a guide, I will meet you and escort you to the host/captain
