Explore one of Ireland's best kept hidden secrets with a Private Guide
The Beara Peninsula is one of the best kept secret in Ireland, where the mountains and coastline come together to give you an amazing view around every corner. Be warned, if you get a sunny day, you may never want to leave!
Avoid the usual crowded tourist routes, and a take a tour through a beautiful rugged peninsula, where the water of Bantry Bay shimmers, the green fields are dotted with sheep and cows, and not to mention the colourful and friendly villages along the way. The locals are renowned for their friendliness and hospitality, and they protect their Irish traditional culture fiercely.
The food in the cafés and restaurants serve the best of Irish homemade breads, cheeses and soups, and the fish is served literally from ocean to table.
Conventional tours won't bring you here because the roads are often narrow and inaccessible to the bigger tour coaches.
We begin our tour counter-clockwise around the peninsula. From the lovely village of Adrigole we travel over the remote and narrow Healy Mountain Pass where you will find lovely views of both counties Cork and Kerry. You may feel the need for a coffee at this point in the pretty village of Lauragh in Co. Kerry.
From there the narrow roads will bring us to the colourful villages of Eyeries and Allihies, with its amphitheatre of mountains as a backdrop. It is believed that the four mythological Children of Lir are buried here. Just outside the village is the beautiful Ballydonegan beach. The scenery along this part of the Beara Peninsula is rugged and beautiful, with plenty of photo opportunities.
Perhaps hunger will dictate a lunch stop in the fishing port of Castletownbere where fresh fish, or the famous chowder is easily found in any pub or restaurant.
We continue to Glengarriff, home for many years to the actress Maureen O'Hara, and on to Bantry with its amazing 300-year-old Bantry House and Gardens.

With Anne and her driver, Dave, we did an off the beaten track tour of the Beara Peninsula. Anne took us where no tour busses can go. It was a stunning day with magnificent scenery in every direction. We stopped for lunch in a village pub and even had the chance to chat with a local fisherman. Anne shared with us many interesting stories related to the area. We concluded the day feeling we had made two new friends in Ireland.
