Steve W.

Ingolstadt, Bayern, Germany

I have a passion for the subject I talk about, which has lead me to do primary history research into a specific areas of the Second World War, which I started 27 years ago.

I specialise in providing English language Second World War tours in southern Germany, which I do full time. The three specific areas I tend to focus on are -

•Third Reich Munich - I have the largest photo archive of all Third Reich sites in Munich and conduct general tours of a few hours through to specialist all day tours for PhD students, the Royal Air Force and so on.

•Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial site - I have been an official guide for the Bavarian State for many years. Others say I have undertaken more English language tours of Dachau Memorial than any other guide. I have met with many people connected with the camp over the years, survivors and liberators. I also provide tours to all the hidden related sites in the surrounding area. I am the only guide in southern Germany who provides this service.

•Berchtesgaden/Eagles Nest - I know Hitler's mountain better than most. All other tours show the Eagles Nest and the documentation centre, which you will see. However, I also show people all the hidden things to see on the Obersalzberg mountain which you will not get to see on a standard tour.

I am friendly and encourage questions and discussion and know this history on the ground better than any other guide. I am constantly talking to people to try to get under the skin of it. For instance I have taken many GIs who liberated Dachau back through the camp many years later and talked to them about the specifics of what they saw and what happened back then.

Despite these events happening over half a century ago, they shaped modern Europe and there are lessons to be learnt, so I feel that that is an important subject to talk about.

I also occasionally undertake more specialist private tours for real history buffs, historians and authors or perhaps sons or daughters of camp survivors to lesser known sites such as Kaufering or Moosberg for example. If you have a specific request please get in touch and I will see if I can tailor something to your needs.

A Recent Review of this guide

A fabulous day. Steve was especially knowledgeable and a really charming guy. Dachau was as depressing as we had expected but walking with Steve while he worked through how and why it happened helped us look at it with a clearer understanding. After the camp tour we walked through Munich and he pointed out obscure but super interesting locations in seemingly every block. An excellent value. Highly recommended.
