Triumph and Tragedy over 800 Years
If you would like to go under the surface and uncover Berlin's Jewish past, then this is the tour for you. We will see many off-the-beaten path sites and learn about the Jewish community of Berlin. While the Nazi history looms large in Berlin, and rightfully so, it is important to realize that Jews have been living in this part of Germany since the 13th century. We will discuss their struggle to be accepted over several centuries, their acceptance and emancipation in the 19th century, the devastation resulting from the Nazi era, and finally the slow and steady return of the Jewish community to Berlin today.
We will thoroughly explore the historic Jewish neighborhood, which is now one of the most charming spots in Berlin, but is riddled with hidden historical sites. This part of Berlin is so small and dense, it is best seen by foot. There are several important sites located further away however, which is why I like to combine both walking and public transportation for this tour.
- Site of Berlin's First Synagogue
- Rosenstrasse Women's Uprising Memorial
- Hackescher Markt
- Hackescher Courtyards
- Blind Workshop of Otto Weidt
- Site of Berlin's First Jewish Cemetery
- Site of Jewish Boys' School
- Missing House Memorial
- Stumbling Stones Memorial
- Koppenplatz Memorial
- Site of Jewish Girls' School
- Adass Yisroel Synagogue
- Heckmann Courtyards
- New Synagogue
This is just a suggestion! If you want to include any additional sites, please contact me and we can personalize your tour.
Please note that the tour will take place no matter what the weather - so rain or shine. As the Germans say, there is no bad weather, just the wrong clothing, so please be prepared with jackets and umbrellas if the weather forecast calls for chilly temperatures and rain.
Meeting Location + Tour Duration
Meeting location: I like to meet my clients in their hotel lobby, and after a short historical introduction, we will head off. If you prefer to meet at a central point downtown, just please let me know!
End location: The ending location is always different, but if you have a specific request, I can certainly make it happen!
