The story told through the eyes of Nelson Mandela with a Private Guide
This is a story tour that traces the rise and fall of the Apartheid state as seen through the eyes of Nelson Mandela. It is a complex, disturbing yet fascinating journey which will bring together all the different strands that defined the path to a democratic society. We start at Lieliesleaf Farm, the secret HQ of MK, the military wing of the ANC, and meeting place of many operatives where they put together the strategic plans to overthrow the Apartheid state. This will set the scene for what is to follow. From there we travel to Kliptown in Soweto to Freedom Square where the biggest single meeting of liberation movements took place in 1955 and led to the adoption of the Freedom Charter. Our Constitution is based on the Freedom Charter. Then onto Vilakazi St, home to two Nobel Peace Prize winners, Hector Pietersen Memorial and Regina Mundi Church. Leaving Soweto we go into the inner city of Jhb to trace the story of the discovery of gold and finally finish up at the Constitutional Court to end the story.
After pickup from your accommodation in Johannesburg we travel to Lieliesleaf Farm in Rivonia where we spend about 1. 5 hours. From there to Soweto to Freedom Square where we will spend some time walking around and soaking in the atmosphere. Then onto Vilakazi St, the only street in the world that had two Nobel Peace Prize winners living in the same street. There we will have lunch then drive by Hector Pietersen Memorial and Regina Mundi Church. This will give an insight into the 16 June 1976 Student Uprising that happened. From there into the inner city of Jozi to understand how the discovery of gold in 1886 shaped the story. A trip to the Top of Africa on the 50th floor of the highest building on the African continent gives one a birds eye view of the city. We will then end up at Constitution Hill, the seat of the Constitutional Court, the highest court in the land which will end the tracing of this inspiring, complex but disturbing story.
