Destroyed & Destroyer in One memorable Day Tour topped by the visit inside the Oldest Abbey of Christianity
We leave early this morning and go straight to Naples, to the hight of Mount Vesuvius. It needs a walk up-hill on last part, but you got here to look inside the crater and see its smoke come out. From up here the view of the Gulf is superb.
According to time, we will have lunch on the way down; or in Pompeii before entering.
The visit inside is a full immersion in the Roman past. We are walking into a big town perfectly shaped in its original form and standing still all around us. Even electoral inscriptions are still visible on plastered walls and you have the sensation that everything ended only some years ago. Looking around, you see the volcano from all angles and you will be explained, in details, how it happened. No other place on earth offers such a felt and visible experience. It seems like everything has been suspended to be shown to our eyes.
On the way back, the stop for St. Benedict Abbey. To admire an imposing building lifted up from the ground and to recall its total destruction during WWII.
Leaving early (7:00am if in winter times or 8:00am if days are longer) from Rome and drive streight to Vesuvius (one pit stop on the way). On top of the Volcano it takes time to reach the top for sort of a climb needed (good shoes !!) so, if we score a record, lunch could happen on the slope of the mountain; or we will have it when down town Pompeii, before the visit to the archaeological site. It takes about a couple of hours to immerse in the passed of Human History and to reemerge fulfilled of marvel. No one should miss such an experience !
On our way back , we detour to reach the top of Mount Cassino and have the third extraordinary amazement of the day : the " Celestial Benedectine Abbey " placed 1700 feet a. s. l. on top of an isolated hill that dominates the valley.
I will take You inside the Cript (not touched by the bombardment) where Benedict and Scolastica (his sister) are buried.
When here , thoughts lift up to higher levels . Also an occasion to buy erbs and honey produced by the monks.
