Nature and history in the bay of Naples
In AD 79 a tremendous eruption of the volcano Mt. Vesuvius buried Pompeii, a Roman city, under a 25 feet deep layer of ash and lapilli.
Today, Pompeii is the most important archaeological site in the world. Nowhere but Pompeii you can walk so ancient streets full of traces of life. You can enter the houses where people lived, the temples where they prayed, the places where they went for entertainment. You can see the tracks of their carts on the surface of streets, the piping of the public running water supply, the "petrified" bodies of the victims of the eruption.
Mt. Vesuvius, the volcano that destroyed Pompeii, is still active and it is considered, today, the most dangerous volcano in the world. Mt. Vesuvius is also one of the most visited volcano in the world. From the top it's possible to look in the depth of the crater and to admire all the bay of Naples.
