The ancient city of Pompeii is probably the most important archaeological site in the world. It was an agricultural and commercial center where about 12, 000 people lived. The eruption of Vesuvius by A. D. 79 the ditrusse and covered it under about 8 meters of pumice, lapilli and ash.
