Plovdiv is the oldest still living city in Europe inhabited since 6000 years BC
Plovdiv is an eternal city. Its foundations on the 7 hills by Maritza River were laid some 8 000 years ago. Plovdiv is older than Rome, Athens and Constantinople. The city is contemporary of Troy and Mycenae. According to some sources it is the second oldest European city and the oldest still living city in Europe. Plovdiv is all in one: a Thracian and classical Greek polis, the pride of Philip of Macedonia, the capital of Thrace under the Roman Empire, a centre of Byzantinism, a stronghold of the Bulgarians, a dream of the crusaders, a magnificent, wealthy and most important city. Famous historical monuments include the Roman Stadium, the Ancient Theatre, the charming Old Town etc. Plovdiv is a spectacular city combining millennial history, unique laid back atmosphere and natural beauties including the picturesque 6 hills, the peaceful Maritsa River and the mystical Rhodope Mountains nearby. Considered as the most beautiful city in Bulgaria Plovdiv will be the European capital of culture in 2019.

Kamen gives a superb overview of the 6000-year history and key sites of old Plovdiv, which seems to be one of the best kept secrets (for USA folks anyway). I wish we had had more time to stay afterwards and explore the area in more depth. There's so much fascinating history and so much to see! Renovations are extensive and ongoing. Definitely take Kamen's tour to get the most out of your stay. He's so knowledgeable and engaging.
