There are water, lakes, waterfalls and forest elsewhere. Plitvice Lakes are unique, they simply must be seen!
Due to the natural beauty of the waterfalls, cascades, caves and rocks, which offer a beautiful mosaic of colours, sounds and shapes surrounded by high mountain forest terrain, Plitvice lakes and its surroundings were in 1949 declared a National Park, and since 1979 have been under the UNESCO protection.
Plitvice is an ensemble of 16 natural lakes. It is an UNESCO heritage site due to its breathtaking views, its fauna and the unique turquoise waters.
Lake water changes color by the second. Within the blink of an eye, you can see blue, green, aquamarine and turquoise. This is due to the way the sun hits the water and the number of organisms and minerals.
Located within the lower lakes are the tallest and most extreme waterfalls. One called Milanovacki Slapovi measures 20 meters in height. Another, called Milanovac Jezero is not as tall, only about 8 meters, but the width is over 15 meters
The tallest and widest of all of the waterfalls, is simply name Great Waterfall (Veliki Slap). It has a height of 70m.
It takes almost 2 hours long drive from Zadar to the entry point of Plitvice NP.

Irena was awesome - she made us feel comfortable right from the start. She had lots of knowledge and didn't once seem tired by our incessant questions! It was a tiringly long day but her energy and enthusiasm lasted until the end when we were securely dropped off at our hotel lobby. We will most definitely want to see Irena again when we return. She made our short trip so very worthwhile, we loved it!
