Private Driving Tour from New Orleans to Nearby Plantations
Visiting antebellum plantations along the Mississippi River gives visitors to New Orleans a glimpse into the grace, grandeur and tragedy of early southern history.
Your guide will give you an understanding of the economic and cultural worlds that built, not only Louisiana, but so much of the United States we know today. Learn about industries such as oil, cotton, sugar, lumber, indigo and citrus and how they allowed Louisiana to become an import/export world power.
Two Plantations will be visited on one side of the river from the following group: Destrehan, San Francisco, Houmas House on the East bank; or Whitney, Laura and Oak Alley on the West bank.
The decision of which side of the river to drive is determined by many factors, often related to length of tour, distance and other plantation-specific considerations.
Your group will join others (at each plantation) at the discretion of plantation management.
The Tour lasts between 6-8 hours, depending on which plantations are chosen and other factors.
9am: The tour will depart from your hotel.
East bank Selection:
At approximately 9:30 we will arrive at Destrehan Plantation and depart around 11am.
We will arrive at Houmas House at about 11:30 and depart around 12:30pm.
As a group we will decide to have a sit down lunch or not; a picnic lunch is an option too.
Depending on your decision with respect to lunch, we will arrive at Houmas House around 1 or 2pm and depart around 3:30pm.
We should return to the city around 4:30-5pm although we could be later because of weather, traffic, pace of the group and other factors. Please do not make early evening plans.
West bank Selection:
We will arrive at Laura around 10am and depart around 12:30pm.
Depending on your decision about lunch we will arrive at Oak Alley around 1:30-2:30pm.
We will depart Oak Alley around 4pm and return to the city around 5:30pm.
Weather, traffic and festivals may delay our return. Please do not make early evening reservations or commitments before 6:30pm.
