From the Carthusian Monastery of Calci (Pisa) to the Brunelleschi fortress of Vicopisano... and more!
The Carthusian Monastery of Calci is the second visited site of Pisa, after the Leaning Tower. It was built 700 years ago for being the house of 7 Carthusian Monks, but it became one of the most beautiful monastery in Italy. The Duke of Tuscany choose it as his second house, transforming it into a small Versailles. Its Baroque style chapels, the cloister and the cells of the monks reveal a hidden world that wants to be discovered.
The little town of Vicopisano was an important fortress of the Republic of Pisa in the XI and XII centuries. Walking through its streets we will dream about the Middle Ages, between great walls and tall towers. Filippo Brunelleschi, architect of the huge dome of the Cathedral of Florence, built an incredible new system of walls and forts to control and protect the Arno valley.
Now, that little city, is famous all over Europe for producing one of the most delicate extra-virgin olive oil of Italy. . . Do you want to taste it?
Are you ready to see an unexpected Tuscany?
We'll enter the Monastery, built in 1366, starting from the Chapel of St Sebastian, the only one in which women could enter. The royal courtyard will introduce us to the monumental marble facade of the Church and its Baroque style wings.
Through its corridors, the Chartreuse of Pisa will take us back to the Renaissance period, a moment of glory for Tuscany.
After the old Cloister, the Apartments of the Duke and the Pharmacy we'll be ready to go to Vicopisano, one of the oldest little town of Tuscany, where Filippo Brunelleschi built up his famous Fortress to protect Pisa and the Arno valley.
We'll visit the XI century Church of Santa Maria, the medieval towers and its wonderful narrow streets, perfectly preserved so far.
But. . . it's time to have a break! The oil mill is waiting for us!
There, we'll visit the olive trees fields, the vineyard and the XVII C. oil mill. We'll taste 9 different extra virgin olive oils, and other delicious Tuscan plats
