I am Spanish, married to an Argentinian. Until 2011 we lived in Madrid, Spain, where I worked in Finance for an American software company. I felt in love with Argentina from the first time I came, I loved its big open spaces, the blue skies, the endless plains in the Pampa, the mountains and pristine lakes in Patagonia, the snowy mountains over the vineyards in the Cuyo region and the desert valleys in the northwest. Every year we spent our holidays in Argentina, so for 10 years I travelled extensively all around the country, and have a lot of different experiences both travelling on my own and with local guides and agencies.
We always dreamt of moving to Argentina one day, so my wife could be closer to her family and I could have the experience of living in a country I liked so much. But having two children and our jobs in Spain, the move was not an easy one. Finally in 2011 we took a leap of faith and moved to San Martín de los Andes, where I am working to make my living as a freelance tourist guide.
What convinced me of taking this step is that during all my experiences as a tourist in Argentina, the more I got out from the beaten path of the big travel agencies and the big groups the more I enjoyed the experience. That gave me the idea of working just on a customized private tours basis, which for me is the most rewarding for the traveller's time and money. This kind of tour is not easy to find here, as travel agencies work mostly with big groups and prescheduled dates.
I do day tours from San Martín de los Andes and also multi-day tours covering the Lake District and the Route 40, going down to the Glacier National Park or up north to Mendoza. I have 7-seater 4WD truck, a Toyota Hilux SW4 with all the comforts one might need. This is the perfect vehicle to travel in Patagonia, as most of the roads are not paved and the distances between places are very big, so having a safe and comfortable vehicle is a must to enjoy the tours here.
I like the tours to be as informal us possible, building a good personal rapport with the travellers. I enjoy being informative but not overwhelming the traveller with lots of information, so we can have a good conversation on personal matters apart from the tour itself. I love meeting people from all around the world, sharing stories and point of views, so I like the idea of the tours not being only an opportunity for the customer to get to know the place, but also for me to know about them and try to see this place with their eyes.
On a personal side I have a good sense of humor, for me the goal of a tour is that the customer and I have a good time together, that is what holidays are for, aren't they? I also enjoy the good music a lot, so I like to play inspiring music while travelling in the car. For that purpose I make compilations that suit well with the landscape, of course my musical tastes might differ from yours, so I am open to any suggestion on the matter! :)
A Recent Review of this guide
Jose was our guide for two complete days at Bariloche . First day was around the seven lakes , at each one , we got a very detailed explanation of the views , like animals and different plants species . We stayed at each view point as much as we liked , there was no rush. Second day also was full of scenic views , starting on top of the hills of San Martin De Los Andes , from this point we saw the bay view , it was wonderful . It was also an absolute experience .
