From Louis XIV to Napoleon
The grandeur of French Baroque, the frivolity of the Rococo, the austerity of Neoclassicism and finally the torment of the Romantics. Let the stunning paintings of the French artists, Le Brun, Watteau, Fragonard, David, Delacroix and many more, tell the history of this great nation.
We will start with the history of the kings who built the Louvre, then focus on the Sun King Louis XIV who built Versailles before moving on to Louis XV and his life and loves.
We will look at the devastating impact of the American Revolution on the French monarchy. The aftermath of the French Revolution brought profound changes, the greatest being the advent of Napoleon Bonaparte. From there, the pace of change quickened, both in society and in art.
We will finish our tour in the sumptuously furnished 19th century apartments with a reflection on what led to the next great artistic movement. . . . impressionism.
Sully wing, Louvre museum. From 17th century French baroque (Charles Le Brun, Philippe de Champaigne) to the 4 greats of 18th century Rococo, Watteau, Boucher, Fragonard, Chardin. Neoclassics, Ingres, David, then the 19th century Romantics Gericault and Delacroix. Then to the Richelieu wing to see the French sculpture hall and the Napoleon III apartments. The tour is flexible so do not hesitate to let me know if you have specific interests or requests.
