I am Sicilian by choice, not by birth. I have to admit, I do not really remember when exactly my passion for Sicily started. It seems I was always fascinated by Mediterranean culture and the way of life. One of the reasons for this is that the Mediterranean can be considered the cradle of occidental culture. This particularly applies to Sicily where you can find the most beautiful remains of the ancient Mediterranean world. Sicily was not only inhabited by the ancient Greeks and Romans, but also by Arabs, Normans and the Spanish. They all have left their traces on the island, on its arts, architecture and cuisine. This diverse historical legacy has also shaped the culture and mentality of the Sicilians, which is so different from that of Central and Northern Europe and the rest of the world.
In accordance with my love for Southern Europe, I specialized after my M. A. in Germany for my Ph. D. in Social Anthropology and in questions of Mediterranean Culture and Society. After some years as a university lecturer Augsburg and Regensburg (Germany) and in Texas (USA), I went to Sicily for a longer period to do further field studies there. This seemed to be my destiny as - also for private reasons - I felt I never wanted to leave this fascinating island again. I have lived here for many years now and have acquired the official Sicilian licences as tourist guide. This gives me the chance to share my knowledge and enthusiasm for Sicily with people from all over the world.
Don't worry, I will not 'kill you off' with history and culture only. Too much do I love the relaxed Sicilian way of life and especially the island's food. We will find time to have nice breaks in bars or restaurants, where I would love to introduce you to Sicilian specialities. Since I am not the best driver on earth, I cooperate with a Sicilian friend who is a licenced tourist car driver. All his cars are brand new, fully air-conditioned VIP-cars. The driver will be on all tours that are not walking tours, always with us to give us the maximum comfort possible.
I hope that at the end of our sightseeing tour you will not only have seen a lot and have had a wonderful time, but also have started to love this wonderful island as much as I do.
A Recent Review of this guide
Anita was by far the best guide we have ever had. She is extremely knowledgeable about Palermo's history, art, architecture and culture. She put together a very well organized 4 hour walking tour of Palermo's historic center and it's most significant sights. She shared information in a clear and interesting way. She also gave us great advice on eating like the locals and how to spend our subsequent days in Palermo. We highly recommend Anita.
