Rum, history and a volcano
This tour takes you to experience the wilder north part of Martinique! We'll discover the rainforest, the famous Mt. Pélée volcano and the Carbet-mountains, taste excellent rums at the Dépaz-distillery and learn all about the tragic eruption of 1902 that wiped out the old capital, Saint-Pierre.
NOTE: Depaz-distillery is closed on Sundays. Can be substituted with a stop at a local beach bar for drinks instead. The tour can be customized by adding also a lunch stop or some beach time etc.
Leaving from Fort-de-France, our first stop is the Balata church, from where you'll have a nice view on the bay of Fort-de-France and can visit the church that's a miniature replica of the Sacre Coeur basilica in Paris.
Then after a drive through the lush rainforest, and stop shortly at the pretty Alma-river at the foot of the Carbet-mountains. Our next stop is the Pelée-volcano. We drive up the volcano to a parking, from where the hike trail starts. From there a 5 min walk takes us to a viewpoint, from where you'll be able to see all the north of the island on a clear day.
We then drive to Saint-Pierre and tour the Dépaz-distillery where you can taste and buy excellent agricole rum.
Follows a visit in the historical town of St. Pierre and the volcanological museum as well as the ruins of the theater. Also a short stop at the fruit market and the old stock market.
After we head back to Fort-de-France through the Caribbean coast passing quaint fishing villages like Carbet and Bellefontaine.
