Granada is the oldest colonial city founded in America
Granada was founded in 1524 by the Spanish conquistador Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba. It is one of the oldest cities in the Americas. Its' strategic location on the shores of Lake Nicaragua made it an important commercial center during colonial and post-colonial times. It is also turned it into a constant target of famous pirates such as Henry Morgan. Between 1655 and 1670, pirates sacked the city three times. After independence, Granada became headquarters of the conservative forces who were vying for control of the country against their liberal rivals, based in Leon. In the 1850s, the city was torched by American mercenary William Walker, hired by their Liberal rivals, who at the time was beating a hasty retreat after a string of defeats by a combined Central American force.
