The Ncwala Traditional Ceremony is held in February each year by the Ngoni people in the Chipata district and celebrates the first harvests of the year. The ceremony takes place at Mutenguleni village near Chipata. When the crops ripen at the end of February, the first fruits are given to Chief Mpezeni as a sacramental meal and thanksgiving to God and the ancestors. This is the essence of the ceremony.
After the fresh fruits have been presented to the king, he takes them into his palace and prepares for the long journey from his palace in the Luangeni hill to Mutenguleni.
The palace is located at about 45 kilometres in Luangeni south-east of Chipata and Mutenguleni is about 60 kilometers south-west of Chipata.
This is followed by cerebration at Mutenguleni grounds. The celebrants are adorned in leopard skins, wielding spears, clubs, shields and eagle feathers. Speeches are given. People sing and dance. The ground literally shakes with the stomping of their feet. More interesting events follows.
This is one of the very interesting tours you may not want to miss as the tour would start with one of the following options.
If you are arriving in Eastern Province by plane, you may land at Mfuwe Airport where you would find me waiting for you. Or if you use public buses from Lusaka or Lilongwe Cities, you would find me waiting for you at Chipata Bus station. If you will be at a hotel or lodge nearby, I will pick you up.
From Mfuwe our tour may take at least 2 and half hours driving on tarred road. From Chipata town to the event venue it would take only 40 minutes drive.
Along the way you would be entertained to various sitings of beautiful views of bushes and local people.
We may pass a couple of traffic road blocks who checks for road safety issues as well as counter poaching units along the way.
During this period of February we experience heavy rainfall in some parts of the country, so you may see this during the period of the tour.
