Colorful History and the Cutting Edge of Today with a private guide
We begin at Astor Place and Lafayette St, once the classiest address in New York. We'll see Cooper Union, the oldest coeducational college in America and McSorley's, the oldest tavern in the city. We then visit St. Mark's Church, where Peter Stuyvesant is buried. At Thompkins Square Park, the city's immigration story unfolds. We'll pass the beautiful pocket gardens of the neighborhood, started on rubble strewn lots and now a prized addition to the neighborhood, on the way to the New York Marble Cemetery, one of the city's oldest. Next it's E. 4th St. , home of some of the city's most notable experimental theaters, to the storied Bowery. Finally we go up Lafayette Street past the Public Theater, one of the city's premiere theater companies. I will point out many terrific places to eat and drink along the way. Special arrangements can be made to incorporate this into your tour if you like. I look forward to sharing my experience and affection for the East Village with you.
