Kid Friendly: No. This may be suitable for mature teenagers, but it's mostly for those who are familiar with American literature and history, or at least the general sense of both.

Friendly: No.
The standard of fitness I recommend can roughly be suggested by the ability to walk a mile without stopping. We will stop, of course, but the primary mode of exploration will be walking.

A private walk through the historically bohemian and culturally rich community of New York

This day could begin with breakfast - so just have coffee if you must have something before we begin. This will be a full day's stroll through Greenwich Village, starting more or less central and coursing around the neighborhood, examining architecture, changes, and listening to the history of this unique little section of New York. Although your guide knows the neighborhood, he may be as surprised as you with something you all will discover; learn to see and hear with fresh eyes and ears; this neighborhood is changing and growing now! Listen to people as the community wakes up over breakfast. Watch as the day begins, gets warmer, and browse with your new neighbors through items you never thought you'd ever see - and be happy to know that people are as happy to see you in their world as you are to be in theirs. This may only be a day, but it will seem world's away from yesterday when you're done. Come - walk me!

Itinerary

From your lodging, or where we agree to meet, we will take the subway, or other public transportation, down to the village - and have breakfast in a Village coffee shop! We'll discuss the affairs of the day, gossip with our neighbors, and then step out to the street - and walk through literature, art, crime, and twentieth century culture to encounter a still vibrant always controversial community of citizens and community activists alternately going about their business - and trying to keep the world under control. We may go east, or examine the core of the Village around Washington Square, exploring a small part of the largest private university in the country. We may discover Kleine Deutschland and the East Village. Or we may see where Elizabeth Taylor's "boyfriend" (and ultimately first husband!) in Butterfield 8 lived. We will have lunch - somewhere! - and peruse the Far West Village as well.

Meeting Point + Tour Duration

Meeting Point Options: Rail or Bus Station, Cruise Ship Port, Airport, Hotel, Address or Intersection, Monument/Building, Suggested by Guide: Or, if you'd like, we'd meet at the Washington Square Arch, at the foot of Fifth Avenue

Duration: 4 hours

The time duration is very flexible - because there is much to see and understand about "The Village," and you might find want to ask many questions!

Transportation

Subway, bus, and walking

What’s Included

Other: This tour may include such expected sights as the Washington Square Arch and The Row, but while we will walk the lanes and pathways, other sights, and some no longer visible, unfortunately, may come into the picture you will see - at least in your mind's eye. Books have been written, movies made, and songs sung in and among these streets, yet as people live there still, while loves and lives are made and lived, dramatic tales can still be witnessed as we walk the streets of ye olde Greenwich Village.

Estimated Local Cash Needed

30 US dollars - $30 is at the relatively low end, per person, for the day, and this really only includes breakfast and lunch. I would advise, however, that you bring at least $50 per person in cash, for there may be many opportunities to buy items for which credit cards are not accepted - and especially at lunch.

What’s Extra

Other: All food and beverage is extra, as are souvenirs and other incidentals such as the cost of public transportation either to or from the starting point. (That may be necessary should we meet uptown and need to journey downtown to begin our walk.)

A Recent Review of this tour

Bill was very knowledgeable about the history and architecture of East Village and Greenwich. We are keen walkers and he covered a great distance but at an enjoyable pace. Provided a variety of experiences - art galleries, park concerts, fashion shops, great coffee shops (best coffee we have tasted in the US),and quirky restaurants. We ended up running a bit over time as we asked so many questions. Good value for the money. Only two of us on this tour so was pricey but worth it for this tour.
