A private tour of the building and its contents
The visit to this museum will give you profound insights into the architectural history of the building, shed light on aspects of a debate centered around the issue of conservation vs reconstruction and finally serve as an introduction to its current collections (of which the head of Nofretete is one of the most breathtaking exhibits).
Similarly to Venice the Neues Museum ("New Museum") had to be built on poles due to the swampy grounds that had to serve for its foundations. Likewise, its reconstruction after WW2 seemed to be a task never to be accomplished until finally in 2009 Berlin celebrated its second inauguration following one of the most discussed processes in the history of "complementary restoration".
After its nearly complete destruction in WW2 it was not until the early 1990s that the British architect David Chipperfield was commissioned to restore the building, acknowledging its contemporary reality and thus transcending a mere reconstruction.
A short introduction to Museum Island will put the building in its context.
Inside the museum we will see and understand:
The frieze of Schievelbein (The desctruction of Pompeii)
Aspects in the iconography of Egyptian Art as seen in its sculpture
Egyptian chambers tombs and death cult
Typology of Egyptian statues
Nefertiti's bust, Echnaton and a singular change in Egyptian religion in the Amarna time
We will constantly change between restored rooms and newly built rooms, thus making a journey through the history of this incredible piece of architecture, of which the centre piece is the former historic grand staircase with its narrative.
This visit will cover various layers of Egyptian Art, Prussian archeology, the development of Egyptology and we will even dip into German philosophy meeting some of Hegel's ideas. We will talk about WWII as well as the former GDR. A dense two hours that will change the way you see Berlin.

Really enjoyed my Museum Island Tour with Angel. He is extremely knowledgeable and his explanation of the art and exhibits that we saw was detailed and compete. He had stories about the pieces that we saw and was able to put them into a historical perspective for me. I left the tour with a great deal of knowledge and a deeper understanding of these museums in Berlin. Highly recommend Angel.
