Since relocating to Napier in 1996 with my wife Judith we have been fortunate enough to call Hawke's Bay home. We made the move from the West Coast of the North island to the sunny East Coast after having enjoyed many a happy family holiday spent at the beaches of Napier, Waipatiki and Waimarama. We just loved the balmy mediterranean climate, the warmth of the people who call this place home, and the life choices Hawke's Bay offered so much that I put on hold my career in Construction and Engineering and Business Consultancy in Palmerston North to relocate to this wonderful region of New Zealand.
We were fortunate to be able to purchase an historic property on Napier Hill built in Hawke's Bays early settlement and pioneering days. Judith and I established a Bed and Breakfast enterprise in the property, initially built by James and Elizabeth Large Circa 1856, and of course named it THE "LARGE" HOUSE after the family. We just loved meeting our guests from all over the globe and sharing the amazing secrets of Hawke's Bay with them. Our enthusiasm obviously worked as "Bridge the World", a global travel organisation, included our business in a "New Zealand's Little Gems" publication.
Due to family commitments, including taking on the care of a beautiful granddaughter, we closed our guest lodge operation and I worked back in the consultancy and engineering professions until recently when I had the idea of combining what I know and love. . . .
Travel, Tourism, Hawke's Bay, and a passion for customer service!
Now I want to share the wonderful Hawke's Bay experience with you and your friends. It really is a most beautiful and diverse place in this vast world of ours!
I can show you a bewildering variety of delights from the Art Deco architecture rebuild as a result of the earthquake of 1931, the oldest existing vineyard and winery in New Zealand, a real Art Deco train and bus, and you will get to meet local artisans who create beautiful sheepskins, mouth watering handmade chocolates as well as see original sculptures in a gorgeous outdoor setting before taking a peek at a real old time Sweet Shop. As If that's not enough I can then drive you to a mountain lookout for the most unbelievable views of Hawke's Bay. A wine tasting experience at the beautiful Craggy Range Winery with an unbelievable and unforgettable backdrop of the historic Te Mata Peak would be a highlight on the way back to the city.
As a discerning traveller you need to know you will be in good hands with someone who understands your needs and expectations. I have travelled extensively overseas and enjoyed many a cruising holiday. What a wonderful way to see a country, especially when you can use a knowledgeable local guide like myself to appreciate the regions history and delights as you visit the different ports of call.
I can't wait to meet you and be your guide for an unforgettable experience.
A Recent Review of this guide
John led an incredible tour of Napier, enhanced by his intimate knowledge of the area. His adaptability was much appreciated as he modified the tour to skip the shopping we disliked. His awareness of the best look out spots from Napier Hill , the newest additions (Maori monument explaining their ability to navigate by the stars), the perfect vineyard for wine tasting and lunch (Mission Estate), the sweeping Hawkes Bay journey from Kidnappers Point to the busy inner harbor was delightful. A great guide!
